Sony Bravia KDL40W5500U 40-inch Widescreen Full HD 1080p LCD TV with Freeview and 100Hz Motionflow Reviews
Manufacturer's Description
A BRAVIA LCD TV is no ordinary television. Design is sleeker, pictures are brighter, details clearer. All BRAVIA televisions are HD Ready as a minimum, with up to 4 HDMI connections, and come with an integrated digital tuner so there is no need for a set-top box to view Freeview TV and radio channels. Most of the BRAVIA LCD TVs feature BRAVIA Sync technology, it takes just one button to turn on your entire Sony home entertainment system, while XrossMediaBar helps you navigate your TV easily with its best-in-class menu screen. After all advanced technology should simply mean technology that does more for you.
The BRAVIA W5500 has all the Sony technology you need to experience a new level of entertainment. BRAVIA ENGINE 3 digital processing delivers a depth, richness and clarity that will take your breath away. Motionflow 100Hz technology keeps fast-moving sports and action crisp and clear. You can connect it to your home network using DLNA and enjoy music, video and pictures from other compatible devices on your TV. Plus you can use the AppliCast™ feature to check on-screen RSS feeds of news and other information while you’re watching your favourite programmes.Savour every moment with all-action Motionflow 100Hz
Motionflow 100Hz for super-smooth, ultra-realistic sport and action scenes
Motionflow 100Hz lets you see fast-moving sports and action scenes like never before by unlocking the amazing detail they contain. This blur reduction technology produces super-smooth, ultra-realistic viewing by doubling the conventional number of frames in a sequence. After every frame it creates an additional unique frame before the next one, based on key factors in the preceding and following images. While similar technologies simply duplicate frames, Motionflow 100Hz intelligently applies information to make movement appear even smoother.BRAVIA ENGINE 3 for the ultimate HD experience
The unique technology of BRAVIA ENGINE 3optimises the quality of every single scene
An LCD television creates pictures by switching millions of pixels on and off. In the W5500 this process is controlled by the BRAVIA ENGINE 3, the latest version of Sony’s advanced digital processing technology. Using a collection of unique Sony algorithms it applies a digital perfecting process to reduce noise and produce cleaner images, higher contrast and smoother motion sequences, resulting in enhanced overall performance regardless of source.
Specifically, it analyses each individual scene, controlling the peak brightness level to generate advanced colour and brightness, and optimising the noise level. It also detects and adjusts the overall colour distribution of each frame and smoothes diagonal lines of pixels in fast-moving pictures to prevent jagged edges and bleeding colours.
In short, it delivers exceptional performance in every single scene.Connect your home with DLNA
Create an entertainment networkin your home with DLNA
The BRAVIA W5500 means you can finally create an easy-to-use home network that lets you share music, video and pictures from around the house on your TV. As part of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), Sony has adopted a universal standard for connectivity that enables your electronic devices, regardless of brand, to ‘talk’ to one another. So now it’s easy to move files between your TV, PC, printer, music player, phone, camera and more, wherever they are in the home. By integrating your TV into a home network, either wirelessly or via a cable, you can use your BRAVIA remote to find photos on the DLNA-enabled laptop in your bedroom and call them up to your living room TV screen. If you want hard copies, just send them to print on the colour printer in your spare room.
As well as BRAVIA TVs, Sony offers a range of DLNA Certified™ devices such as VAIO notebooks, the Sony Ericsson mobile phone, the PLAYSTATION®3 and the GigaJuke hard-disc drive music system.
AppliCast™ brings live internet feeds toyour screen while you watch TV AppliCast™ keeps you in touch while you watch
AppliCast™ lets you see internet information on your BRAVIA TV while you're watching television. You don't have to switch on your PC - just call up widgets onto the TV screen. Three widgets, including a clock and calendar, are already installed on the on-screen XrossMediaBar and you can add RSS feeds of news, weather and more by connecting your TV to the internet via the Ethernet port at the back. Just select the information you want with your BRAVIA remote and it's right there whenever you need it.

A great choice
I took delivery of this TV 3 weeks ago to replace an older and smaller LCD model. Having been looking at the various televisions of this sort of size that are available, I made my final decision to buy this particular model based on looking in stores, careful inspection of specifications and looking widely at reviews on the internet. As something which is going to be a major feature of my living room for quite a long time I wanted to make the right decision. Certainly there are cheaper brands, and also cheaper Sony models out there, but the Bravia 'W' range seems to be the best combination when it comes to features, quality and price. Having used it daily I can now confirm that I think I made a wise choice. This Sony has the best colour display of any television I've seen. When you first watch it it's as if everything is suddenly in 3D - such is the depth and definition of the picture, even when using it to watch standard definition Freeview television as I usually do. I thought that I was getting a very good quality Freeview picture with my previous setup, but it is noticeably better with this Bravia. I've also invested in a Sony BDP-S350 Blu-ray player to use with this TV and watched a number of discs through that. As you'd expect the quality of the picture then is exceptional. The sound is also surprisingly good for a TV. There's plenty of energy in the sound output and great clarity too. I can now hear things that I'd missed before - I actually got up to answer the phone at one point before realising that it wasn't mine - it was on the telly! There's only one snag that I've found with this TV and that's a minor one. Although it has a good number of connections available to it Sony has reduced the number of SCART sockets on this model to 2. As someone who is still in the process of upgrading my televisual equipment, the rest of my equipment (except for the Blu-ray player) uses SCART connections so a third one may have been a bonus.
Impressive
Similar to most people, I was drawn to the 40W5500 because of the reputation(and lack of stock) of the 40W4500. A member of my family took delivery of a 4500 before christmas and the quality I saw there cemented my desire to own a Sony W series LCD Television. Firstly the price offered for this set by Amazon is second to none. As a reliable and known web retailer it filled me with confidence to purchase, and I havn't been disappointed. Firstly, the set-up was as easy as could possibly be. Plug everything in and let the auto set-up take control. The pictures from Standard definition, from both the built in digital tuner and Sky, provides an excellent viewing experience. No pixillation, sharp lines and excellent detailing in dark scenes. High Definition Blu-Ray pictures are quite simply in another world. Having Run Wall-E, Mama-Mia and Phantom of the Opera, the picture is at worse on par with the predecessor 40W4500, if anything of better quality....absolutely breathtaking! I look forward to a glowing review from the likes of What Hi-Fi, and then the ability to gloat as the stock of this TV suffer under what I'm sure will be massive demand. In Summary, great service from Amazon; Excellent Set from Sony
Faultless Delivery.TV impresses so far! Just thought I'd pen an early review after an evening's play! This is my first flat screen which i ordered 2 weeks ago after much research on the older sony models W4500. Took the plunge with no official reviews. Firstly, as the others have said, first class delivery, Amazon ! Free super saver del. arrived day after release! Glad I went with Amazon now instead of others as price was good as well. Now the TV - Very impressed with all the connections available and multi-media capabilities (not yet tried out). Haven't noticed clouding issues yet as with other sony models. discovered "picture-in-picture" function - great for watching sky HD cricket and BBC news etc at the same time! Digital freeview took twice to set up - missed it first time, but easy enough to navigate to set up again - now I can get many freeview channels even with my normal rooftop aerial. Sky HD channels definitely more detailed than normal - sports like cricket looks v sharp and un-blurry. Wii with component cable looks impressive! Have to slowly try out the rest of the functions which i'm sure will be just as good... Read more

Manufacturer's Description
BRAVIA V4000 Series LCD TV |
| The HD Ready 1080p BRAVIA V4000 Series LCD TVs with Freeview come fully loaded with technology in a stunning new design. BRAVIA Engine 2 works to maximise the potential from any signal and, coupled with a Dynamic Contrast Ratio of 33,000:1, delivers an excellent viewing experience whatever you are watching. |
HD1080p HD 1080p offers you very high resolution to generate it’s picture. The ‘p’ stands for ‘progressive scan’, which scans all the lines at once to add stability & smoothness to fast-moving images. This makes 1080p TV’s excellent for sport broadcast & games. |
Integrated Digital Tuner / Freeview Having an integrated Digital Freeview Tuner means that your TV has a built in receiver that will give you access to many more channels without the need to have any additional hardware, such as a Freeview box. In 2007, the government began switching UK broadcasting to digital, so if your TV doesn’t have an integrated digital tuner feature you wont be able to view any channel without buying the additional hardware. |
BRAVIA Engine 2 You can’t have too much of a good thing, so we designed BRAVIA ENGINE 2. By using our most innovative technologies like intelligent noise reduction and Advanced Contrast Enhancer, BRAVIA ENGINE 2 builds on the power of the acclaimed BRAVIA ENGINE and adds four new image processing stages. What’s more, BRAVIA ENGINE 2 incorporates full digital signal processing, which means that it can enhance many different signals. |
Dynamic Contrast Contrast ratio is improved and all shades between the brightest white and the darkest blacks are maintained, so the picture has more depth and detail. |
BRAVIA Sync BRAVIA Sync enables the control of your TV and peripheral devices with a single BRAVIA remote through menus displayed on your BRAVIA LCD TV. |
HDMI Sockets The V4000 Series has 3 X HDMI Sockets – 2 at the rear of the set & one at the side. |
Photo TV HD Photo TV HD picture processing technology designed to faithfully reproduce the natural beauty of your still images when viewed on your HD Ready 1080p BRAVIA LCD TV. Whereas all other TVs have technology designed to optimise video images, the BRAVIA V4000 has BRAVIA Engine 2 for viewing videos and Photo TV HD for viewing still images. |
24P True Cinema '24p True Cinema' mode, is a perfect match for movies. Film is shot at 24 frames per second, but UK televisions operate at 25 frames per second. This means that when you watch a movie on DVD, you are seeing it sped up by 4 per cent. '24p True Cinema' enables the panel to display films at their intended 24fps (frames per second). |

EXCELLENT - THE VERY BEST!
No other words than excellent - I'm no 'techno wiz' and so like simple things, gadgets to do what they need to do withou hassle or effort (ie. reading 'the manual') from me!
This TV is excellent value for me and - BEST OF ALL - it self-installs, just plug in, switch on and the TV does the rest, finding the channels, tuning in and saving them including the former-Freeview one's.
The picture can he slightly dodgy due to the HD and mega-pixels (whatever!) so some older films and TV shows might look a alittle grainy and the image can be disorted if very dark on screen but DVD's play great!
The sound is terrific.... I could go on but you get the drift - buy, sit back and enjoy whatever you want to watch on a really big telly!!
Black isn't everything...
There's no doubt that the Sony Bravia TVs have the blackest blacks around but I had to return this TV as the colour balance was so poor! Bright reds glowed an orange/salmon colour and dark reds were pink but there is no adjustment for this. After 2 days of messing around I ended up setting the colour to the lowest point above B&W.
HD looks good but shimmers a little. SD has some of the worst motion lag I've seen in a while, especially from the built-in Freeview tuner. HDMI sources can be viewed in 2 modes: full pixel which gives you a black border or normal which crops and softens the image significantly.
Sound is OK but I've heard better!
The equivalent Samsung uses the same panel and has more adjustments so go for that instead or try Toshiba who give you much more picture settings (and a handy reset button to restore default settings!).
Short Lifetime
The TV worked very well with PS3 and SkyHD. Especially for the price and brand name, no complaints. However, the warranty is 12 months. And in my case, after 13 months, the TV "died". The screed became darker, and during channel change, 'ghost' image of previous channel remained on the screen for a short period of time. In other words, required to be repaired as soon as the warranty expired. Very short life expectancy in my case.

Stunning upscaled SD with Virgin Media V+
I agree with all the positive comments but was a bit apprehensive about the way standard definiton broadcasts would look. Well I have not been disappointed - when watching SD content via Virgin Media V+, the picture is almost HD quality!
